The Red State Chairman

Chairman Dean's fight against national media and the debate over whether or not he is "good" for the Democratic party will never end. We've all seen several articles, including Dan Balz's fairly good MSM piece on the grassroots impact.

But there was heartening news Monday from the Lawrence Journal-World:

Howard Dean's popularity hasn't waned in Lawrence since his failed Democratic presidential campaign began more than two years ago.

A total of 895 tickets for his Friday appearance at a public rally for the Democratic Party at Liberty Hall were sold in about 2 1/2 hours Sunday.

When the tickets went on sale at noon, an estimated 100 people were standing in a line that stretched from the front door of Liberty Hall, 642 Mass., around the corner and east on Seventh Street to The Raven Bookstore.

This one article removes a great deal of the foreboding that I've felt since the race for chair began. The national debate on Dean will never end, and I still feel that many here and elsewhere on the net are still suffering from a serious case of Deaniac afterglow. What's key to me here is that the Lawrence, Kansas debate on Dean appears to be over, at least for the Dems. And they like him.

Thanks to mandyky for pointing the article out to me.

Do Recall (none / 0)

...that Lawrence, Kansas is home to the University of Kansas. Students, academics, and people who live in college towns are Dean's strong suit. This isn't to make you feel more anxious, but rather it's one thing if Dean speaks in Lawrence or Topeka...but if he starts talking to the employees of Cessna in Wichita....you know it's time to celebrate.

Re: Do Recall (none / 0)

D'oh. Crashed back to earth now. Well, not totally. I hadn't remembered that KU was in Lawrence, though.

I'll take solace in this piece of love from the same article until the next person shoots me down (kidding here, and thanks for the geographic reminder on KU):

Hamil, also of Lawrence, agreed. "I was very interested in Dean early on," she said. "You always know where he stands. He's not a liberal extremist."

This sort of thing was underreported, (none / 0)

even at the time, but the Dean campaign, succeeded by a large number of v. active red-state Democracy for America chapters, did a great deal for local Democratic parties long out of power. Montana, of course, is the best example of this, but it was/is true of many other places.

Dean said and says that it's okay to be a Democrat. A good thing, even. And people who are still Democrats in places like Kansas and Montana really like hearing that.

This will continue to be underreported, btw, even if and when Democrats start winning in "surprising" places. Like, Montana.

Got it. I'm very good at reading national web news and 6-8 national papers/my own regional papers. I just need to have the local press pushed to me every once in while.

Yeaggh!!! (none / 0)

It is true that the debate over whether Dean will destroy the party or not will go on for his entire term, possibly ending if we take back Congress in 2006 (or at least make a good showing).  I personally think that Dean will put the fight back into the party that it needs so badly.  I have had enough of co-opting the other party's platform in our futile attempts to win elections and win over the red states.  We need to fight for our values and not kowtow to them.

True. I think that the blogosphere and netroots in general will be helpful to grassroots folks across the country to get stories like this out so that Dems across the country, Red State and Blue State, can be sure to have answers when people ask "But how is doing in X State?"
